Mention Edinburgh to any tourist and the first image they’ll conjure is that of the castle that majestically watches over Scotland’s capital. One of the nation’s – and indeed the world’s – most famous landmarks, Edinburgh Castle continues to woo visitors in their droves. The view from the battlements is breathtaking, while the building itself is every bit as impressive. Take a guided tour or roam its great halls and expansive passageways at your own pace, with an audio guide transmitting fascinating facts via a set of headphones. Along the way, you’ll learn about the Jacobite force that came within a whisker of capturing the castle in 1715, the surprising place where the Crown of Scotland was stashed for safekeeping during WWII and the witches who were burnt at the stake in their hundreds in the 16th century. After completing your tour of the castle, stop off for a bite at Queen Anne Tearoom, tucked away in Crown Square at the top of the castle. As you nurse a hot cuppa and dig into a homemade scone, you can relive the best bits from your day’s excursion, be it the extravagance and splendour of The Great Hall, the coruscating crown jewels of Scotland, the serene St Margaret’s Chapel – Edinburgh’s oldest building – or the mighty gun known as Mons Meg.

A lovely experience with extremely friendly staff. I went at 4pm on a Tuesday and there were hardly any ques or crowds. I enjoyed the museum, the great hall and the viewpoints especially. The crown jewels and chaple were a bit underwhelming. I'd not necessarily recommend this for young children or old adults as there's quite a lot of stairs and areas where you could trip but it was a wonderful day out and we hardly had to wait at all. Saw everything in 2 hours.
over Easter and purchased a 48 hour Royal Edinburugh pass which gave us fast track entry. We visited all areas of the castle and found it excellent value for money spending over 2 hours in the castle. The history is fascinating and the views stunning. We had tea and cakes in the tea room which has excellent views across the city and where lucky enough to be in the Castle at 13.00 for the firing of the cannon ( modern artillery gun). The walk up to the castle along the Royal Mile is also very pleasant and is the place to but gifts particularly if you like Whisky. A must if you have not been before.
