Portobello Swim Centre is a proper Victorian baths, the sort of swimming pool that’s sadly become an endangered species in the past 30 years. The baths hark back to a bygone age, one when the therapeutic benefits of taking a dip were extolled by medics and everyone from toddlers to pensioners was partial to a swim. Many of the original 19th century features have been preserved including the Turkish baths, the only one of their kind in Edinburgh. You don’t even have to be an ardent swimmer to enjoy an afternoon at the centre; for the epic sea views alone, it’s worth popping by and pulling up a seat in the cafeteria. Open from 7pm till 10pm during the week and till 4pm and 6pm on Saturdays and Sundays respectively, the centre offers adult and junior coaching plus fitness classes and a well-equipped gym. Work up a sweat in the weights room before soothing your muscles by plunging into the pool.

It's imposing structure on Portobello promenade is not to be missed, and if you don't even fancy swim, just go in for a look. It's beautiful, a mix between old fashioned and modern. It was refurbished a few years ago so it's facilities are top notch but honestly the architecture of the building is enough for me, echoes of a bygone era!
