Newcastle Castle

There’s a whole lotta history locked within the walls of Newcastle's Castle Keep and Black Gate. Visitors can uncover the changing face of the castle through the ages, from royal fortress and border stronghold to grim dungeon and teeming slum. New exhibits allow visitors to experience what life would have been like for inhabitants in two of North East England's most fascinating historic buildings. The first fortification on the site of Newcastle Castle dates back more than 1,800 years. The earliest of these was the Roman fort of Pons Aelius, built to guard the bridge over the River Tyne as part of Hadrian’s Wall. The fort was abandoned and fell into ruin when Roman rule in Britain ended in around the year 400. In 2011, Lottery funding heralded renovation of the Black Gate and the Castle Keep and the linking of the two buildings together to form one fascinating site: Newcastle Castle.

From the outside it looks like a small castle keep. None the less I wandered in and was stunned at the £12.50 entry fee. But I paid it, and boy am I glad I did! The castle is more like a Tardis - bigger on the inside. And staffed by guides who talk at length about a subject if prompted. There is reproduction armour to try on and weapons to examine. Stocks, a pillory, demonstration for children and great views over the city. The ticket is valid for a year, so I can always go back again.

Fantastic view from the top. Very peaceful, but the wind can be a bit chilly. Plan to spend at least half an hour on the view alone.
