San Carlo Cicchetti

The plates might be small at San Carlo Cicchetti, but the portions are generous and the flavours exceptional. The chic eatery is located on the ground floor of Manchester’s House of Fraser. Whether you’ve just finished shopping your way through the department store from top to bottom, or are merely passing through Deansgate, the restaurant forms a welcome stopping point where you can kick back and enjoy a well-deserved meal. Part of the San Carlo Group of Italian restaurants, San Carlo Cicchetti forms a contemporary space where the decor looks every bit as good as the food. Light grey Italian marble, warm colours and touches of silver and gold lend the restaurant a sophisticated air. Each season, Cicchetti unveils a new menu made using the freshest ingredients, many of them sourced directly from Milan. With everyone from its director to its chefs hailing from Italy, there’s no disputing the restaurant’s authenticity. There’s no disputing the quality of the small dishes that are the restaurant’s stock in trade either. The action starts early, with breakfast served from 8am on weekdays, 9am at weekends. Eggs are a speciality – choose from Eggs Benedict, Florentine or Norwegian – or try The Great Cicchetti Breakfast, complete with Lancashire farm pork and leek sausages and Bury black pudding. Afternoon tea is a real highlight at the restaurant: whether you choose a traditional cream tea or a more indulgent champagne tea, you’re in for quite a treat. Cicchetti’s main menu is when the small but perfectly formed dishes are rolled out. GamberoniPiccanti sees Sicilian prawns served with chilli lemon and garlic; Spiedino di Pollo is chicken wrapped in pancetta with rosemary. The bruschetta is oily, indulgent and full of crunch, while the seafood is a particular highlight. As an introduction to Cicchetti, try FrittoPortofino, in which deep fried prawns, scallops and calamari are paired with garlic aioli and spicy Calabrian dip.

A few of us went on a Friday night who have never been before. The concept of Italian tapas was explained and we ordered accordingly. The food was fabulous, the fritto portofino was particularly amazing as was all the pasta we had. The place had a really lovely atmosphere. The big issue though was the disgraceful state of the ladies loos. Out of the three, only one was working, one was completely blocked (and disgusting) and one had a tatty out of order sign on it with the sanitary towel box sat on top of the loo. The taps were wafting about in the breeze and it was generally in a poor state of repair. These things matter Cicchetti, talk about fur coat and no knickers!

The alternative to across the road, in the ground floor of Kendels department store. The formula is sharing many small dishes. This is a great place for lunch, the window tables are good. It suits two roles. My wife and I go there whenever we are having lunch in town. I meet friends for business lunch. Relaxed, good food, good service.
