World Golf Museum

Beginning as a cabinet of curiosities in the 1800s and known as the British Golf Museum for the past 30 years, it then entered a new era in 2021 as The R&A World Golf Museum. Situated opposite The Royal and Ancient Clubhouse, visitors can explore the rich history of golf from its very beginnings up until the modern day. It boasts one of the largest collections of golf memorabilia in the world, as well as fascinating galleries documenting the evolution of golf. Gifted to The R&A by the renowned golf book collector and IMG vice-chairman, Alastair Johnston has amassed nearly 30,000 volumes since he first started collecting golf books during an internship at IMG in 1969. The past, present and future of golf is brought to life through immersive, eye-catching and interactive displays, as well as six new thematic zones. The museum holds a 5-star rating by VisitScotland in recognition of the exceptionally high standards of customer service and facilities provided to visitors. It is accessible for all ages and offers a retail shop and first floor brasserie.

We almost passed by this gem! Travel through golf history as you learn about everything from original clubs and golf balls to golf attire through the years. My adult son enjoyed the putting simulator and we both enjoyed reading cards posted by patrons explaining what it meant to them to visit St. Andrews. Great gift shop.

Spent over an hour walking the history of golf. Many interesting exhibits. Some interactive viewing stops. Particularly interesting was the history of golf club manufacturing and golf ball manufacturing. Ended with a chance to putt with an old wooden putter and old style golf balls.
