The Spanish Butcher

One for the carnivores, The Spanish Butcher serves up hulking great slabs of meat, grilled to perfection any which way you like it. This is the sort of fare that trenchermen and gourmands feast on. We’re talking Galician beef, Ibericanjamon and fresh seafood plucked straight from the cool waters of the Med. This is food served the Spanish way, but brought straight to your doorstep – or to Glasgow’s Merchant City at least – to save you from having to make that mission to Spain yourself. The interior of The Spanish Butcher has a chic New York loft vibe to it, ensuring that the decor is every bit as arresting as the food. Start your meal with something light like grilled Spanish octopus or sauteedGirolle mushroom with poached hen’s egg before moving on to a main course of pan-seared hake or cauliflower ‘steak’ – perhaps there is space for vegetarians at The Spanish Butcher after all. Sharing dishes encourage the sort of social eating that is a staple of Mediterranean culture; order the charred monkfish on the bone for two or the rubioGallega bone in prime rib.

Arrived early and had a drink at the bar. Taken to our table right on our booking time. At first the service was slow, but that improved and by the end we were impressed by how good the service was. The food was amazing. Overall, fantastic food and fantastic service, a bit pricey for what it was, and lighting wasn't bright enough.

My wife and I visited for the first time in July and were very impressed. The Jamon was lovely and very reminiscent of visits to Madrid. The Spanish take on the Scotch egg was fantastic. For mains we opted for a sharing steak and the prime rib. The sharing steaks are served with 2 sides and 2 sauces. The broccoli was fantastic and the manchego and truffle oil chips the best chips I have eaten in quite some time. The steak was perfectly cooked and super tasty. Our waiter, young chap Ciaran was excellent, perfect balance of attentive, but not constantly fussing at your table and good balance of charismatic chat without being overly familiar. The theatre of bringing the cuts of meat to the table and explaining the theme of the restaurant all made for an excellent evening. Although not a cheap evening out, it was certainly worth every penny. Will be back in future.
