Overlooking the silvery Tay, Broughty Castle is located just outside of Dundee. The famously bad poet William McGonagall wrote a poem about the site, which you can enjoy at the foot of the building. ‘The village of Broughty Ferry is most beautiful to see,’ he observed, due in part to its ‘stately mansions and productive fishery.’ Not quite Robert Burns, but McGonagall was right - Broughty Ferry is a picturesque location for a day out. On sunny days, locals swarm to the local ice cream shop and walk along the pier, relax on the beach or take the kids to Castle Green Park. As for the Castle itself, McGonagall described its walls being ‘as strong as Londonderry,’ although it’s not quite as difficult to gain entrance today. Admission to the museum is free, where you’ll learn everything there is to know about the sieges and battles that have taken place within these historic walls. Built in 1496, the castle houses a wealth of displays which cover every aspect of this seaside town: you’ll explore the history of Broughty Ferry’s people, as well as the local wildlife and environment.

Excellently preserved historic castle with stunning views up and down the Tay. Some interesting artifacts and historical information. Free parking and free admission just an added bonus. Some of the internal stairs are very narrow and steep so not really accessible to some. Overall a good couple of hours.
