When in Liverpool, it would be remiss not to visit The Beatles Shop, whether you’re an ardent fan of the mop-haired ‘60s icons or possess a more casual interest. Since first opening in 1983, this cracking basement shop on Mathew Street has been hawking signed Beatles memorabilia and all manner of products related to the Fab Four. From John Lennon pencil toppers to t-shirts, keychains, slippers and magnets, the cavernous shop is a must-see attraction, particularly for hardcore fans. Needless to say, Beatles music can be heard emanating from the shop throughout the week, the band’s timeless hits playing on a vintage 1959 jukebox. Pop in and browse through a dizzying collection of merchandise whilst reacquainting yourself with the band’s extensive oeuvre. While some items play on novelty value – Paul McCartney limited edition stamp collection, anyone? – there is a pleasing mix of kitsch products and bonafide collectibles. Genuine vinyl from the 1970s is firmly in the latter bracket, while mugs, wigs, sunglasses and baseball caps might more accurately be included in the former. Incidentally, the Beatles Shop organises an annual auction of Beatles items every August. Head along to see what goodies go under the hammer; you might just make a steal.
