Cawdor Castle

Set amid sprawling manicured gardens, the palatial Cawdor Castle is truly a sight to behold. Like something out of a fairytale, this turreted 14th-century Highland castle stretches over four storeys, its interior furnished filled with a collection of vintage furniture. Originally built as a private fortress, Cawdor is steeped in Highland history. Wander through the castle’s wide passageways, taking in the grandiose wall hangings, intriguing artefacts and fine period furnishings. The tapestry bedroom, with its large four-poster bed complete with red drapes, and the dining room, boasting a majestic stone fireplace, are particular highlights. Don’t omit a visit to the old kitchen either, which is fitted with an original 19th-century range and a plenitude of antique cooking implements. In addition, the attraction boasts three immaculate gardens, complete with herbaceous borders and a variety of ornamental trees and shrubs. There’s a large wood and even a nine-hole putting green on site, should you wish to work on your game. Sustenance, meanwhile, can be found at the Courtyard Cafe, which offers a fine selection of cakes and scones, in addition to hot food options. Finally, at the Wool Shop, you can pick up some cosy Scottish cashmere as a token of your visit.

A beautiful castle where the Dowager lives in the off season. A nice place to grab tea. Gardens are lovely and we were there when the arbor of Laburnum was flowering - a bright yellow and lovely scent.

We were there in July. The weather was perfect and the gardens were beautiful. Basically you walk through on your own which is good because you can set your own pace.
