Overlooking one of the Scottish Highlands’ most scenic attractions – Loch Ness – is the historic Dores Inn. Situated on the northern bank of the loch, around eight miles from Inverness, the 19th-century inn has been hailed by Lonely Planet as one of Europe’s 50 top ‘undiscovered and overlooked’ destinations. Overlooked or not, the beautifully restored country pub and restaurant serves up reasonably-priced, quality dishes seven days of the week. If the weather is favourable, you can even enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner on the sun terrace, in full view of the loch, or in the ‘OutDores Inn’ beer garden. Just be sure to make a booking – the venue is extremely popular with locals and Nessie-hunting tourists alike. The mixed crowd only serves to enhance the atmosphere; on summer evenings the inn is positively jumping. The menu at the Dores includes an array of traditional Scottish dishes, from haggis, neeps and tatties to heaped seafood platters. The Highland-reared steaks, meanwhile – from 10oz ribeyes to 20oz T-bones – are exceedingly popular, served with hand-cut chips or salad. One thing you can always rely on is prompt and friendly service; Highland hospitality is alive and well here
