Located in Stonehaven, The Tolbooth Seafood
Restaurant is one of the best of its kind in Scotland,
and its rustic charm makes for an intimate
atmosphere. White-washed stone walls and
unpretentious decor gives it a distinctly maritime
feel; you’ll be glad you’ve made the trip here even
before sampling the menu. The seafood they
prepare is often headed under ‘catch of the day,’
so you know you’re receiving fresh food that is not
long out the ocean. Of course, the restaurant also
caters for those who’d rather dine on meat and
vegetables; while the seafood is recommended, it
is by no means mandatory. If you visit during the
summer, langoustines and lobsters are widely
available; served with nothing more than a little
garlic and lemon, the taste is absolutely divine. The
recipient of numerous awards, The Tolbooth fully
deserves the many accolades that come its way.
THE SILVER DARLING
Pocra Quay, Aberdeen, AB11 5DQ

The Silver Darling is the embodiment of Aberdeen’s
unbreakable bond with the sea. Situated on the cusp
of the harbour, where the coastguard tower looms
and the ferries depart, the restaurant’s views are
as exquisite as its cuisine. When night falls, diners
can gaze out across the North Sea, illuminated by
the winking lights of the supply vessels berthed
offshore. Named after the Scottish term for herring,
The Silver Darling has been consistently praised for
its inventive fare and has been listed in the Good
Food Guide for over two decades. Starters are
made using North Sea crab, pan-fried king scallops
and fresh rock oysters. Paired with homemade
pasta, caviar sauce and dill and fennel butter
sauce, they are transformed into toothsome dishes
that are bursting with flavour. A fine selection of
wines provides the perfect accompaniment to the
rich French fare. On a warm summer’s evening,
there’s no better dining spot in Aberdeen.
