PROVOST
SKENE’S HOUSE
Provost Skene’s House
Guestrow (between Broad Street
and Flourmill Lane)
Aberdeen, AB10 1AS
01224 641086
Provost
Skene’s
House
dates from 1545, and today
exhibits a series of recently
refurbished rooms designed
to show how people have
lived throughout the centuries.
Lord Provost George Skene
gave the mansion its name,
and lived in the house during
the latter half of the 17th
century. He is said to have
commissioned the carved
plaster ceilings when he made
alterations to the structure in
1676. The Regency parlour
is the epitome of this period’s
opulence, and the walls in the
Painted Gallery are adorned
with a variety of unusual
religious
paintings.
The
Costume Gallery frequently
changes its displays of dress,
where you can see a varied
programme of exhibitions and
collections from Aberdeen
Art Gallery. In the 1930s,
the adjacent buildings were
demolished and a campaign
was begun to save Provost
Skene’s House. In 1953,
as a consequence of this
campaign, the house was
opened by The Queen Mother
as a ‘Period House and
Museum of Natural History’.
Today, one of the city’s most
popular cafes can also to be
found within the cellar of the
house, where you can pick up
a tasty lunch within its rustic,
stone walls.
