If you’re not familiar with The Gordon Highlanders,
they were a regiment of the British Army for 200
years, until they became part of The Highlanders
4th Battalion Royal Regiment of Scotland. With a
colourful and fascinating past, this museum pays
tribute to their journey through and influence
on history. The main gallery explores battles in
France, India, Afghanistan, South Africa and their
involvement in the Napoleonic Wars, WWI, WWII
and the Cold War. Interactive in style, the museum
really brings these events to life using maps, video
footage, life sized models, touchscreen technology
and of course a wide selection of antique uniforms,
colours and weapons from across the eras.
There’s a large armoury section as you’d expect
from an army based exhibition, but there are also
surprisingly genteel exhibits to enjoy too, including
a silvery, china and crystal sections featuring
intricate and valuable items used in the regiment’s
mess. Here you can experience a dinner table laid
out as it would have been when being used by the
regiment, with walls adorned by vintage art works.
Guided tours are available, or you can roam at
your own pace and the museum caters for a range
of corporate and special events. When you’re
ready for some fresh air, you can enjoy the delights
of the museum’s gardens with their charming array
of flora and fauna and then take tea in the stylish
contemporary surroundings of the Duchess Jean
Tea Room. Here you’ll find home baking, daily
specials and meals created using high quality
local produce. Before you leave be sure to pop
into the shop where you can purchase some of
the Tea Room’s popular and decadent Duchess
Jean shortbread to take home. There are also lots
of gifts and memorabilia available as mementos
of your fabulous day at The Gordon Highlanders
Museum.
