CAFES, BARS & CLUBS
121 Gallowgate, Aberdeen, AB25 1BU

This cool jazz club came into being back in 2011,
to continue the work of Jazz Aberdeen. A group
of local enthusiasts of the music genre joined
forces to create a hub where some of the best
international jazz could be showcased. Most
of those involved volunteer their time for free,
with support from Jazz Scotland and Creative
Scotland. Known throughout the UK as one of
the best jazz venues around, The Blue Lamp
has a superb, intimate ambience and a fantastic
sound system. World class musicians have played
here, so it’s well worth keeping an eye on visiting
acts and upcoming events. The club also offers
regular workshops, and the opportunity to jam
with the community jazz band. As well as night
time shows, there are relaxed Sunday afternoon
sessions – the perfect way to unwind before a
busy week ahead.

Characters Coffee House is an ideal spot for a
working breakfast or a chilled and relaxing lunch.
It’s a cosy place to open the laptop and enjoy a
freshly brewed coffee with a delicious homebake
while you work or catch up with friends. The cafe
lies just a few minutes’ walk from the city centre
and is a great option to dine by Aberdeen harbour
while you watch the world go by. The soup of
the day is accompanied with a large selection
of paninis and sandwiches, making Characters
perfect for a quick bite or to recharge with a cup
of coffee brewed by a friendly barista. Picture
this: it’s Saturday morning and you’re out for a
walk down at Footdee. You pop into Characters,
sunlight is seeping in through the window, you can
hear the machine brewing coffee, James Blake is
playing softly in the background. You’ve just been
served a freshly brewed latte. It’s a good day.
