berdeen is not called one of Britain’s ‘most architecturally distinctive cities’ for
nothing. Beneath its imposing buildings and granite exterior though, visitors will
find a warmwelcome and surprising hidden depths. Scotland’s third largest city
offers a wealth of culture, entertainment, shopping, nightlife and nature - leaving
you spoilt for choice and already planning your next visit.
Of course, it’s no good having so many options if you don’t know where to find them, so as
you explore Aberdeenshire carryThe Entertainment Guide with you. Its wealth of knowledge
will guide you through coastal towns, castles, golf courses and restaurants, providing detailed
information on the very best local attractions.
Aberdeen is a city of the sea, where ships dock almost up to the busy centre streets. Its strong
fishing heritage can still be seen in Footdee, known by the locals as Fittie, a quirky area that
transplants a fishing village into a bustling city. There’s also the gleaming new coastguard tower,
and beneath it one of Scotland’s greatest fish restaurants, the award-winning Silver Darling.
A fewmiles further up the coast lies a more recent development, Trump International Golf Links.
The clubhouse and restaurant deliver the last word in luxury, but it’s the fairways that woo so
many to this part of the world. The imposing dunes and gently undulating grassland give way to
the swell of the North Sea, an exquisite setting in which to enjoy Scotland’s greatest sport.
Thanks to the influx of oil money, the region boasts one of the highest
standards of living in the UK; train and bus travellers alighting at
Union Square are greeted by a booming metropolis. In recent
years, Aberdeen has been transformed into a formidable retail
centre, as befits Scotland’s third-largest city. Five shopping
centres, filled with major name retailers, mix with quirky
boutiques and independent stores to make one of the
best shopping experiences in Scotland.
If you’re more of a culture buff then Aberdeen has
you covered here too. Wander through the traditional
old town with its cobbled streets and 15th century
cathedral. Then mosey into one of the city’s impressive
museums, including the Aberdeen Maritime Museum,
the Tolbooth Museum and the Zoology Museum. Not
to mention the Aberdeen Science Centre, packed full of
interactive exhibits and live shows, and the Aberdeen Art
Gallery. Keep an eye on the calendar for various cultural
and music festivals throughout the year; the Jazz Festival in
May is particularly popular, as is the Aberdeen Highland Games.
If you ever wanted to see a live caber toss, your time has come.
