In case you missed the memo, Gin
is in. The Jolly Botanist is the latest
bar to have caught the gin bug,
and the results are impressive.
The Morrison Street premises,
which opened in 2015 following
a £730k refurbishment, is replete
with vintage framed newspapers,
bare lightbulbs and exposed
brickwork. Dominating the bar is a
huge mural of the botanist himself,
complete with top hat, stick and
dragonfly wings. The decor may
be authentically Victorian, but
ultimately patrons are going to
be more concerned with what’s
behind the bar. Not surprisingly,
gin features prominently, including
gin cocktails made with prosecco
and all manner of tempting
concoctions. Tanqueray is the
house gin, but there are plenty
of other brands available to suit
the serious gin connoisseur. 70
gins, to be precise, plus draught
lager from the likes of Krusovice
and Caledonian Brewery. A
breakfast menu entices early
birds through The Jolly Botanist’s
doors, with service extended later
on weekends. The pub’s French
windows, which allow light and
warmth to permeate, are flung
open on sunny days. Haymarket
residents have swiftly taken to the
bar with its cheery ambiance and
friendly staff. Early signs would
suggest that The Jolly Botanist
is going to be around for the long
haul. Pay a visit and refresh your
knowledge of all things gin.
